Helpful Suggestions for Choosing Big Rugs

December 4th, 2010

The room(s) you need to put a large rug in isn’t the main thing to focus on, but rather you need to think about things like your budget, the furniture and drapery of the room and how many people will be traipsing around on the rug. It’s also nice when everyone in the house likes the rug! The following are some guidelines to use when picking out large rugs for your home.

If you are looking for large rugs to give your room character, a good choice would be an Oriental rug. There is some argument over what this term means, but actually it can refer to almost any rug that was created in Asia or the Middle East. Persian, Turkish, Indian and Chinese rugs are all many times called Oriental rugs. Traditionally, these rugs were handmade, but today the majority are machine made, although in many cases only an expert can tell the difference. Antique Oriental rugs in good condition can be very expensive, but if you are on a limited budget you can get modern versions that have a very similar look. Large oriental rugs usually have very detailed patterns and can be wonderful for the decor of the room.

In some cases, you may look at various large rugs, but you won’t be able to find the ones that will fit in the rooms you want them in. Maybe the room you are shopping for has a weird shape. Or, you may not want a rug that has an ordinary shape.

You may, for instance, want a triangle shaped large rug, or a hexagon even. In cases like these, custom rugs are ideal because you can cut them just how you want them to look. Sure, you will have to pay a little bit more for custom rug than you will for a rug that’s already made, but you shouldn’t mind spending a little extra for the perfect rug. A rug isn’t something you buy very often. Sometimes it’s hard to find a large rug in the shape you want, and custom rugs allow you to specify exactly what you want.

Similar to anything else, when you are in the market for a generous sized rug, you need to keep in mind the amount of money you are able to spend on it. Most often, the priciest rugs are the ones that are created with natural fibers. In the case of historic rugs, such as Southwest, Oriental or any other kind of heirloom rug, you will be spending your money on characteristics, such as the condition of it and how well it was crafted. If you have a limited amount of money to spend, you might want to consider manufactured rugs. Several of these now look fairly similar to natural fibers, specifically acrylic, which is really similar to wool in its appearance and feel. Your budget is definitely not the only thing you need to think about when you search for large rugs, although you need to keep it in mind.

Buying new large rugs can be a lot of fun because you know whatever room you put them in will be changed. When choosing the correct rug for your needs, always consider the proper size, the correct look and the style for your specific needs. When you go out buying large rugs, use these techniques and you’ll be sure to find the perfect one for your needs.
