How to Brighten a Bedroom with Furniture and Decor

January 7th, 2011

Do you have a dull and dark bedroom? This can be a good thing when it comes to sleeping, but for the overall look and feel of the space, it is a good idea to invest in a few extra pieces and new decorating methods to bright up this space. The good news is that you can do this without a lot of expense and you can have an open, airy feel. These are great ideas for any bedroom, but consider them ideal for a guest room. Most guest rooms need to be super functional while still being inviting. These tips to brighten up the space will help you to accomplish that.

• Start with the right furniture. Rather than dark colored wood, or harsh metal, go with daybeds with trundles in the space. Daybeds offer a welcoming feel to them, while still giving you seating when the bed is not needed for sleep. Moreover, you can select these in white or other soft colors to open up the space.

• Get the right paint in place. To brighten up the space, use pastel colors or other light colors. Painting the room a soft yellow is an easy way to bright up the space, but do try to use some color. White is too stark and can be limiting in some spaces. Lighter colors allow the light coming into the space to bounce off the walls.

• Add additional furniture as needed but do not overcrowd the space. One of the worst things you can do for any space is to overcrowd it with too much furniture. Choose beds with under storage or consider using just one dresser. When you incorporate a dresser with a mirror on it, this, too, will help to brighten up the space because it will allow light to bounce off of it easier. Be careful not to use too much furniture, which will create shadows and hold back the room’s bright feel.

• Use drapes, but avoid heavy or dark colors. Rather, invest in a pair of white sheer drapes. When the windows are open, the light will pour into the space with the breeze, allowing these drapes to move, creating more openness. For privacy, add a set of white colored shades underneath. The white will allow the light to stream in without darkening the room.

Keep in mind that the furniture you purchase will play a role in the brightness of the room. If you invest in items such as daybeds with trundles, you keep the space open while still having the extra sleeping space you need for guests. You can find discount bedroom sets that also offer an open feel, especially when you want to brighten a bedroom that is regularly used. The key is to invest in furniture that is lighter in color and to keep the number of pieces in the space to a minimum. The combination of the open area and the streaming light allows the room to be naturally bright. Invest a bit of time into brighten your space and you could just brighten your mood, too.
