Kitchen Renovations – Working with Smaller Spaces

February 15th, 2011

A small house or small rooms in any part of the house is definitely difficult for an interior designer. It is hard to create a design when you are limited by the space you have to work with. And in a small kitchen, it would be even harder to keep the area feel roomy and spacious when you have a lot to work in a limited space. But one good thing about having a small kitchen is that it would lower the cost of a kitchen renovation project over all. Small kitchens let you work with a smaller budget than when you have a large kitchen.

So with that, you have to work things out to your advantage. First, you have to decide whether you wanted a total kitchen transformation, or just a few changes and improvements to the current kitchen arrangements. If you just want some changes to what you already have, then identify what are the changes you want and act according to what you are aiming for. If it’s a major transformation that you want, then you have to prepare your budget, because however small your kitchen is, it’s still going to cost you a few thousand dollars.

If you have to start with your walls and flooring, make sure that your options for both are functional and aesthetic. For the floors, find some patterns that will make the area seem more spacious. There are lots of flooring options to choose from, but if you want the cheaper options, you can use vinyl or laminate flooring for that. For the walls, try to find lighter shades like peach or a cool tint of beige, since they tend to exude an airy ambiance. Cupboards and cabinets, if not installed and arranged in the right places tend to create a suffocating feeling. Try to install them in places where they do not block the lights too much. Don’t place them in spaces where they seem to put a limited corner in your kitchen.

Arrange your refrigerator, sink and stove in a “triangular” setup. This is the classic setup. A kitchen serves as a 3-in-1 area—it functions as a space for meal preparation, food storage and cleanup. To make it easier, kitchens are usually arranged in a way where these three functions are closest to each other. That is why they are usually arranged in a classic triangle.

Since you are making some revamps to your kitchen, it is only wise to check which stuffs you wanted to put back and what you wanted to throw away. Do not hold on to things that have lost their functionality already, if your blender is already malfunctioning, then when it’s time to bring all the appliances back to the kitchen, leave the blender, and replace it. You cannot afford any serious electrical damages in the kitchen due to malfunctioning gadgets. As they say, prevention is better than cure. It is safer and also much more efficient to have a kitchen that has minimized or eliminated electrical dangers. And if you are going to purchase new appliances, chose the smaller ones. Since your kitchen is small, it would be inconvenient to have an extra-large refrigerator. Keep to the smaller ones, since it wouldn’t occupy too much space in the area.

If you have a small kitchen and you wanted more space, you could always ask you builder if expansion of the area is possible. But if you have a limited budget and you can’t afford to expand the space, you don’t have to be frustrated. With a small kitchen, you can just let your creativity take control. Even with a limited space for your kitchen renovation; you can have amazing results that others will surely admire.
