Decorating Your Ceiling

June 22nd, 2011

A ceiling has the ability to make a room. The light fixtures that hang from it, the shape of it, and the height of it can add elements of theatre, elegance and character to the space it’s found in. Some ways to decorate your ceiling are:

Fans are often thought of as soar-eyes. They are usually made in plastic or wood, don’t particularly go with anything and aren’t often regularly cleaned or well taken care of. However, this does not have to be the case. In Mexico for instance, it is very common for people to have beautiful fans made out of woven wicker or wood, shaped in beautiful large petals. They are well suited to the style of homes found in Mexico and can add quite a lot of charm to a space.

Light fixtures can be very aesthetic and add a lot of character to a room. From blown glass to elegant chandeliers there is so much that one can do. A person should decide whether they want something modern or classic, something bold or something barely noticeable, something industrial or something elegant. From there they can choose which fabric would go best with the room and furniture in it. Glass, stainless steel, plastic perhaps?

Shape and height:

High ceilings are preferred on an almost universal level. They evoke a sense of grandeur and prestige. They make a room larger and more important feeling. A cathedral ceiling is tall, sure of itself and almost spiritual. An arched ceiling feels long as if you were in a tunnel, or a chic converted barn, and a ceiling with some slanted walls appears quirky, unpredictable, like being in an attic. The shape and height of a ceiling can add a lot of personality to a room, so much so it can be indicative of who or what should occupy it. Scattered slanted ceilings might be appropriate for a young girl, while cathedral ceilings are probably best for a parents’ room, and tall flat ceilings suited to a dining or entertaining room.

Dramatic ceiling painting is generally reserved for grand churches or royal palaces, but there is something to be said about their beauty. Bold colours, texture, and illustrated narrative are quite spectacular, especially when you’re in an ancient building of significant importance like the Sisteenth Chapel. Gold paint, royal blues and deep reds can give a room a sense of importance and beauty. Having said that, coloured rooms in a person’s home are best paired with a solid white ceiling.

There you have it, four things you can do with your ceiling to make it something more than just a ceiling.
